Thesis: chapter 3 draft

The Distance of the Green Light

Gatsby reaches toward the light across the bay as if it could close the space between the past and the present. Fitzgerald returns to it three times, and each time it is farther away.

By the final chapter the light has lost its color entirely; what remains is the reaching, the boats against the current, and a reader who knows how the story ends before Gatsby does.

The novel’s quiet argument is that longing outlives its object.

02 · Replay

Watch it being written.

Scroll through the document as it was typed, character by character. Pastes from outside stand out. Text that was deleted comes back.

  • Typed, at the pace it was written
